Nikhil Varaiya is Professor and Chairman of the Finance Department at San Diego State University. His additional teaching experience has included the Cox School of Business, Southern Methodist University in Dallas and the School of Business Administration, University of Washington in Seattle. He has also taught in executive programs of the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University. At present he teaches courses in competitive analysis and financial management in the MBA for Executives Program, and a course in financing growing ventures in the MBA Program at San Diego State University. He also teaches in the Community Economic Development Program at SDSU. He is the recipient of the 2005-06 Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Faculty Contributions to the University. He has also received the Outstanding Faculty Award in the MBA for Executives Program in 1994, 1996, 1999, 2001-2003, and 2005. He is also a recipient of Outstanding Paper Awards from the Financial Management Association, and Journal of Retailing. He is Chair of the Executive Committee of the EMBA Program at SDSU.
Dr. Varaiya received his B.S. in Mathematics and M.A. in Economics from Bombay University. His M.B.A. and Ph.D. work in Finance was completed at the University of Washington, Seattle.
His research interests are in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, valuation, and strategic management. His articles have appeared in the Banker's Magazine, Financial Analysts Journal, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Services Research, Management Science, Strategic Management Journal, The Technology Management Handbook, Financial Executive and other publications. In 1999-2000 he completed a research study: The Share Repurchase Decision: Causes, Consequences, and Implementation Guidelines for the Financial Executives Research Foundation.
His consulting assignments have encompassed fairness opinions in the context of equity issues; valuations in litigation assignments; financial analysis of new products; evaluation of firm financial performance; review and development of business plans, as well as advice to firms for management of growth and profitability.
Dr. Varaiya is past President of the San Diego Chapter of Financial Executives International and has been a member of its Board of Directors since 1991 where he currently serves as Vice President of Professional Development. He was Chairman, Board of Directors of USE Credit Union from 1996 - 1999, and a member of its board from 1993 - 2000. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of TIE - San Diego, an organization devoted to the enhancement of entrepreneurship.
